Photography has slipped in over the years. That’s only for 2D visual art that hangs on a wall like Paintings and drawings. To sell on the fence or within 20 ft of it, between about 5am and 8pm you must have Jackson Square Artist Permit A. But just barging in with no clue would lead to accidentally offending people who can be fiercely protective of their space. If you want to start, talk to the older ladies out there, learn the ropes, be kind, and find a way to join in respectfully. There’s complicated turf wars going on all the time between them. At night they can extend to the fence and around the park. The result is that tarot readers claim religious exemption and can operate without a permit but ONLY on religious ground, in front of the cathedral, at least 20ft away from the fence of the park. The old timers will tell you that back in the 1990s there was a huge turf war between tarot readers, performers, and visual artists. I’m a current Jackson Square Artist, so here’s the lay of the land in 2023: Jackson Square is a strange patchwork of City, State, Federal, and Church land and there are distinct areas with their own security, their own laws, and their own permitting structure. I know this question is from over a year ago, but I’m leaving an answer for anyone in the future. I've seen people set up on Bourbon street when they close the roads at night. Off the square all you need is permission from the store owner to set up on their sidewalk. The readers are by nature a little harder to pin down. Sure there's a ton of grift in the government but some of those pennies do make it into the potholes, so do the thing and get the permits plz thxĪnything in the Quarter needs express VC Com approval if it's merch. The customer is the one paying the tax, it doesn't come out of your pocket. I don't advocate that anyone skirt the law but you know there are plenty of people doing it. Louisiana tax commission is a massive pain in the butt, and the City is not a lot better. You can sell at pop ups, markets, online, business to business (wholesale), etc. I think it's a home based business one, which annoyingly you aren't supposed to keep your inventory at your house and definitely not supposed to sell from there. There's some kind of permit you can get for site sales. You'll be responsible for self employment taxes if you are legit, so hold back $2 for every $10 you earn just to be on the safe side.įor sales of wares (not a JS artist), you need a tax permit issued by the City and by the state. Services are nontaxable here so you don't have to mess with sales tax, but the city and state and feds all expect you to report your income and pay any applicable taxes on that. If you read at a shop, the shopkeeper has the permit. I think readers can just show up but you have to have an occupational permit wherever you set up on the street. You need a license to do anything in the square. Other places you might be able to do a push cart, but I think in the VC that's pretty sharply controlled. They don't allow mobile vendors in the Square. You can either sell art that hangs on the fence during the day or be a reader at night. ↝ Add your neighborhood next to your username!
